REVIEW: Arlo's Cocina Mexicana

Disclaimer: this new joint on Wetmore Road is owned by the brother of a friend of mine.  To be honest with you, I probably never would have given it a second look had she not suggested I give it a try. I'm glad I did.

This restaurant opened on July 1.  It is in one of those unassuming strip joints in the middle of that long road that straddles the right side of the airport near Wurzbach Parkway and Wetmore Road.

We went for breakfast.

Since I was a piggy I had three breakfast tacos.  First up was the carne guisada.  The meat was tender and flavorful and very generous.  The tortilla was somewhat reminiscent of something from my childhood. Like something mom still makes.  Fresh and very homemade  The chile gravy was tasty, fragrant and again with the taste of something very familial.

Since I am on a picadillo kick here of late I tried their version. Very savory albeit a bit juicy for my preference.  Again the tortilla rocked.

Yes we all know I am a piggy so when I had finished those two tacos, I asked for a third: machacado.  Can you see all the dried beef they pack into this egg taco?  Meat was both plentiful and appetizing. Do I have to say it again?  These tortillas rocked.  I asked my friend's sister if they had their mother in the back making these from scratch?

So if you ever find yourself on the right hand side of the airport on Wetmore Road and you have a hankering for some authentic Mexican cuisine, stop at Arlo's and give this place a try.  The food is good; the wait staff is friendly and the prices are just right.

I think I found my new favorite Sunday breakfast place---come join me why 'dontcha?
